Top Fives - Album closing tracks

A while back I listed my favourite side one, track ones. As it's been a while since I put up a list, I decided to go with a variation of a theme and go with closing tracks. A few rules here... no bonus songs (for example, "No Shelter" on Battle of Los Angeles), hidden tracks ("Mr E's beautiful blues") or live albums ("Where did you sleep last night?" from Nirvana's Unplugged).

Alice in Chains - "Would?" (Dirt)
Alice in Chains get the short shift when discussing the grunge bands of the early 90s, unfairly so given how good Dirt is.

Portishead - "Glory Box" (Dummy)
There was criticism directed at the 2009 Hottest 100 of all time over the lack of diversity (gender, genre)... had this song made the list (as it should have), well, there'd still be criticism, but the number of songs with female lead vocals would have increased by 50%.

Radiohead - "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" (The Bends)
Possibly the best song on The Bends, which given that album features songs like "Fake Plastic Trees", "My Iron Lung" and "Just" speaks of how good it is. So very dark though.

The Drones - "This Time" (Wait long by the river and the bodies of your enemies will float by)
"Shark Fin Blues" made my track one side one list, and here's the closing track to the same album. For now, I still opt for Havilah as my Drones' album of choice, but it's a close call.

Foo Fighters - "Walk" (Wasting Light)
Wasting Light is quite possibly my pick for the best Foo Fighters album, and it finishes with an absolute corker.

  1. For your consideration Famous Last Words by Billy Joel on The River of Dreams. :-)
