Top Fives - break-up songs

Okay Lloyd, since you asked for it, here's my top five break-up songs. Or at least, the top five of those that have come to mind thus far.

Soft Cell - "Tainted Love"
Almost instantly recognisable from the synthesisers, it's this version that has been covered by the likes of Marilyn Manson and The Living End, rather than the Gloria Jones original

Pearl Jam - "Rearviewmirror"
Maybe not a break up song per se, but lyrically it is certainly evocative of moving on from someone who once formed a large part of your life.

The Cruel Sea - "The Honeymoon is Over"
Some mighty fine controlled anger on display (musically and vocally) in the chorus.

Ben Folds Five - "Song for the Dumped"
Given the title, one would expect the hostility present in the lyrics, and that's why it works so well.

Soko - "I'll Kill Her"
Hmmm, seems that this list is getting more aggressive as I progress through it...

  1. Tainted Love you're full of surprises. Interesting side note The Honeymoon is Over was on the soundtrack for the neat and very 90s Empire Records. You know I love Rearview Mirror but it is Song for the Dumped that is typical Mike. A classic that I in my ignorance have never heard of and immediately fell in love with. I'll Kill Her is just...wow. Impressive list as always.
